Science Magazine Goes Nuts Over Happer Committee

In case you missed it, the US National Security Council has floated a proposal to form a Presidential Committee that will take a hard look at some of the climate change alarmist reports coming out of the federal agencies.

I reported that important event here. The effort is being led by physicist Will Happer, a well-known skeptic.

Not surprisingly, the climate alarmists are apoplectic at the very thought that a group of scientists might examine their cherished alarms.

The prestigious magazine/journal “Science” has been a leader in expressing outrage, in a way that clearly shows that they have no idea what is going on. Their confusion is a fine example of why the Happer Committee is sorely needed.

When a supposedly great scientific publication cannot understand the situation, it is worth a closer look. It turns out Science Mag is operating under a simple fallacy. We might even call it the “alarmist fallacy” since most alarmists fall for it.

The very first sentence of their very first critical article on the Happer Committee expresses the alarmist fallacy very nicely. Here it is:

President Donald Trump’s administration found a way to formally question climate science after almost 2 years of false starts.” (Emphasis added)

The fallacy is obvious — alarmism is equated with climate science. The committee is not questioning climate science, whatever that might mean; it is questioning climate alarmism. The two are very different.

The fact is that alarmism is one interpretation of the vast body of research that climate scientists report, while skepticism is a contrary interpretation. In short, there is a scientific debate.

Skeptical scientists like Happer have a very good grasp of the actual science. What they object to is alarmism’s interpretation.

Both alarmism and skepticism are based on climate science, but neither is the whole of climate change science, much less climate science, not even close. A quick search reveals that the scientific literature contains over two million articles that refer to “climate change.”

Alarmism and skepticism are differing claims about what this vast body of research adds up to. They are not that body itself, so it is wildly wrong to equate either view with climate science. The assessment of science is different from the science being assessed.

As it happens, this Science Mag article is reprinted from E&E News, another supposedly elite outfit when it comes to scientific communication. It systematically and stupidly equates alarmism with “climate science” from beginning to end.

Here are a few more glaring examples of the alarmist fallacy in this article (with emphases added):

Science Mag: “Its goal is to provide an “adversarial” review of climate science to determine if a series of recent reports have overstated the risks posed by global warming, according to a memo circulated within the White House obtained by E&E News.”

Reality: The goal is to provide an adversarial review of the alarmism in these reports.

Science Mag: “Happer, who is not a climate scientist, has rejected mainstream climate science for years.”

Reality: Happer rejects mainstream climate alarmism (as do I).

Science Mag: “Longtime opponents of climate science hailed the move, praising a critical review of climate science because it leads to government policies with cost implications.”

The alarmist fallacy occurs twice in one sentence!

Reality: These opponents of alarmism are praising a critical review of the alarmism that is promulgated by out-of-control federal agencies.

Of course, this article also asserts specific alarmism in various familiar ways, the usual stuff, but these are easily contestable.

The truly deep fallacy is to think that climate alarmism and climate science are the same things. This is wildly stupid.

It just shows that science news outlets like the Science Mag and E&E News have no real concept of what is actually going on, namely a serious scientific debate.

It is no wonder then, that their readers also do not know what is going on. Even worse, this alarmist fallacy occurs in many other news outlet articles as well. Keep an eye out for these occurrences and blow the whistle on them.

The alarmist fallacy is journalism ruined by advocacy.

After ClimateGate, Nov 2009…. Clueless Curry moved from Alarmist to Lukewarmist, had a fake debate with the Hockey Stickery Doc, Mikey Mouse Mann in the Disney screed Discover….

Enough smart-ass, BIG MOUTH. IF YOU CANNOT SAY SOMETHING NICE THEN KEEP YOUR EFFING TRAP SHUT. There is only one absolute. Curry and Mann have a right to say what they think. END OF IT. AD HOMINEM ATTACKS MAKE YOU, JERK OLSON A tiny, tiny, tiny person.

Alan, no-one has a right to commit fraud upon the public. That is known as “Defrauding the public.” If they are so ignorant as to not know that the rubbish they peddle is outright lies, then unfortunately, ignorance is no defence. They should as a minimum be sacked and at best charged and jailed for the frauds that they commit.

That wasn’t a very nice thing to say. And why can’t others also say what they think?

I spent thousands of my own dollars, hundreds of hours of my time attending events with Lindzen, Singer, Curry, Spencer, Watts, Delingpole, Morano, Monckton, Moore, Patrick and dozens more of these sanctimonious, fake skeptic hypocrites. This fake debate would have ended a decade ago if they allowed First Principal science on Radiation Physics and Thermodynamics.

You might not like what Olsen says, but he is right. As a Professional Civil Engineer he knows more about the subject than the Faux-Scientists in the field. The reason— he understands Thermodynamics & Radiation Physics more that most scientists & engineers. IMHO Climatology has not elevated itself to a Hard Science and requires the other sciences to keep it line.

One of the reasons against Happer is that he is a physicist, not a climatologist and is therefore unqualified. I agree, as this is similar to asking an astronomer to cast horoscopes.

Since climatology is a subset of physics then there is no reason why a physicists cannot lead an inquiry into a physics related science.
