Carbon Dioxide: Benefiting the Biosphere

The Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change posts a new video, along with links to 15 recent articles, demonstrating carbon dioxide (CO2) has crucial positive benefits to life on earth.

The website’s commentary showcases new developments in the world-wide scientific quest to determine the climatic and biological consequences of the ongoing rise in the air’s CO2 content.  It separates reality from rhetoric in the emotionally-charged debate that swirls around the subject of carbon dioxide and global change.  In addition, to help students and teachers gain greater insight into the biological aspects of this phenomenon, the Center maintains on-line instructions on how to conduct CO2 enrichment and depletion experiments in its Global Change Laboratory (located in its Education Center section), which allow interested parties to conduct similar studies in their own homes and classrooms.

The Future Fate of Coral Calcification in a CO2-Enriched World (16 October 2017)
New evidence supports the view that coral calcification is a biologically controlled process that will be little impacted (if at all) by changes in seawater pH (i.e., ocean acidification) that are projected to occur in consequence of rising atmospheric CO2 emissions…

Two Soybean Cultivars Respond Positively to Atmospheric CO2 Enrichment (13 October 2017)
As the world’s population increases, it is becoming ever more important to identify which crop cultivars provide the greatest yield increases per incremental rise in atmospheric CO2

The End of the Ocean Acidification Scare for Corals (12 October 2017)
Alarmist claims of near-future coral reef dissolution, courtesy of the ever-hyped ocean acidification hypothesis, have themselves dissolved away thanks to the findings presented in this new paper. Clearly, the world’s corals are much more resilient to changes in their environment than acidification alarmists have claimed them to be…

No Impact of Ocean Acidification on the Behavior of Juvenile Damselfish (11 October 2017)
Three separate tests reveal no correlation between ocean acidification and behavioral traits of this inhabitant of southern California coastal waters…

A CO2-Induced Global Stimulation of Terrestrial Carbon Uptake and Water Use Efficiency (2 October 2017)
Over the past three decades, rising atmospheric CO2 has stimulated global gross primary production; and it has done so while keeping total global ecosystem water use constant…

Climate Warming Improves the Breeding Productivity of a European Bird (29 September 2017)
