Researchers Work Out Why Sex Is Good For You In Old Age

British researchers have found frequent sexual activity among older adults leads to “higher cognitive function” including stronger memory and language skills, AAP reports.

In tests of their brain power, those who had sex weekly scored two percent higher than those who had sex every month.

In the verbal fluency tests, which reflect higher cognitive abilities, participants had 60 seconds to name as many animals as possible, and then to say as many words beginning with F as they could.

A group of 73 people aged 50 to 83 took part in the tests measuring brain function and were also asked to complete a questionnaire about how often they were sexually active. Thirty-seven said weekly, 26 said monthly and ten said never.

Researchers at Coventry University previously found having sex improved older people’s memory – but did not look at how often participants had sex.

Dr Hayley Wright, from Coventry University’s Centre for Research in Psychology, Behaviour and Achievement, said: “We can only speculate whether this is driven by social or physical elements, but an area we would like to research further is the biological mechanisms that may influence this”.
